We did it! and here's what's next...

Shoes and Uniform money has been raised! Do you realize that is $5160 in just a few months! Thank you to everyone who donated, "talked it up," or prayed for this money to be raised! Now we will be awaiting the children's big smiles when they do get their shoes and new uniforms.

For most of those kids who are getting their uniforms and shoes for the FIRST time, it will be their first time they will have received new shoes or clothes in their entire lives. It will be a big day. However, because Children's Hopechest is a non-profit organization, they wait to wire the funds when they have large amounts for other care points, at the end of each month. Since we are too close to the end of the month, the funds will not be wired until end of May. We are hoping that the shoes will be ordered before the money arrives to save some time.

We are not sure yet what our next capital project will be, or in other words, what the next major need is, but we DO have a fundraiser I want to tell you about!

CAKES! A friend from our church, Amanda Lockman, has agreed to help us raise the next big chunk of money with the sales from her gorgeous decorated cakes. We will auction off some of her most amazing cakes on May 4 and all proceeds will go to Kechene! You can check out my facebook on that day to see the cakes and to participate in the auction, esp. if you live Dodgeville. If you don't live in Dodgeville, you can bid, win, and donate the cakes to me. haha.

These are just samples of what Amanda makes, not necessarily what she will be auctioning off on May 4.

Carrot Cake

White cake with raspberry filling

Chocolate cake

Please check out Amanda's facebook page for her information before the auction.

Yishake

I have to share a great story about a little boy from our care point at Kechene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In Nov. 2010, I had the privilege of meeting 56 of our 130 kids at Kechene. I will never forget one of the boys named Yishake. The kids walked i
nto the classroom to meet all us visitors from America. They politely filed into the room with their hands behind them, sat down, and folded their hands in their lap. One little boy hobbled in with a cane.

His foot seemed to be deformed in a way that pointed his
right foot inward, making it unable to fully straighten it out. The cane he used was one that had an arm handle on as well as a place to hold on to. The end of the cane, I noticed, was in rough shape showing signs of much use (perhaps a long walk to school).

The second thing I noticed about Yishake was that he was adored by all the kids.
He had no stigma about him from others, or himself.

He was genuinely happy and JOYFUL! His walk was not easy, or even just a limp, but rather his whole body seemed affected from the bad foot as it bent in difficult ways just for a step forward.

When I returned home from meeting these amazing children, we started to get excited about getting these kids sponsored. I shared a lot with my family and friends, including our pastor and his wife. Without hesitation, Pastor Brian and Cherie said they would sponsor. Cherie stopped over one day and I set out a few pictures of the kids I really wanted sponsored, one being Yishake. Cherie and her eldest son, Nathan, chose him hands down.

Ever since that day, as with all the sponsors, our pastor's family has done their part to being Yishake's family from afar. They have sent him letters, prayed for him, told others about him, and continued the $35 a month that it takes to sponsor him; nutritious meals, dr. appts., spiritual education, textbooks, uniforms, shoes, etc. However, they have always wanted to provide for a surgery to help his foot. I had told them that it would be difficult at that time since it was very difficult to recover from something like that without the assistance of care takers at home, which Yishake did not have. So, they recently asked again how they could help. I talked with our Children's Hopechest contact in the field and asked about purchasing a cane.
The response I got was breathtaking! I was overwhelmed with excitement to share the news from afar about Yishake with his sponsor family. The news from Ethiopia was better than details on buying a new cane. Instead, we heard that he had surgery on his foot and is recovering! The staff from Kechene is visiting him regularly so as to feed him nutritious meals from the care point and give him his lessons. He will return to school soon with the use of BOTH feet and NO CANE!

I was so amazed by the impact of this one family and how their sponsorship of this care point not only feeds and educates to bring hope, but it brought hope to a little boy who would otherwise not have been able to function in Ethiopia fully and provide for himself. He has a future so different now than before sponsorship. He has the hope of a future!

Though this sponsor family is sponsoring Yishake, they and the entire group of Kechene sponsors can take part in this blessing of Yishake's surgery. It is a group effort as all the sponsors' financial support gets pooled together to provide for cases such as this or any other serious cases that may come up. God has provided for this little boy to have a place to go to school that will love on him so much that they got the medical help he needed to get his surgery. All of this was done through all of you!

Thank you Brian, Cherie, Nathan, Josh, Rachael, Lisa, Tally, and Hannah.

And thank you to all of you who sponsor with this family to provide for that environment that can now share God's love in so many ways and give them HOPE!

Track Season shoes...

Well, it's track season again. Baseball and soccer season are also just around the corner and that means NEW SHOES! Of course these are for our elective activities and not their day to day activities.

Fortunately, our son, Caleb and his friends have shoes that are actually just fine for a few more runs...and most likely we'll go get a new pair very soon before the first meet.

However, our kids at Kechene also need new shoes. Though 56 new pair were purchased last year at this time, that was a year ago and they are growing out of them. Caleb and his friends' shoes are one pair of many and we are replacing them after just a few months of running.

The kids at Kechene, ALL need new shoes.

are
new students, like the little boy to the left, or students
who already got a new pair in 2011,

they actually all need new shoes.

It has come to my attention that the children are trying to play soccer in their shoes and having a difficult time kicking the ball. I wonder why.

Visit Children's Hopechest to make a donation for the next round of shoes! Can you imagine what you would do if your own children only had this pair for all their activities?

Even though my son and I think he "needs" new track shoes, I think he and I can agree it can wait a few days. The kids at Kechene can't wait and they clearly NEED shoes. Join me in our quest to put shoes on our kids at Kechene! Thanks!!

On behalf of Children’s HopeChest Ethiopia, I would like to extend my gratitude to all of Children’s HopeChest partners and supporters. It is my honor to thank all of you for your generous donations, support, and commitment.

Since the time the organization began to implement its objectives in transforming many lives in Ethiopia, Children’s HopeChest Ethiopia has been constantly working in the Survive, Thrive, and Succeed of its mission. I am glad to let you know that it is through the generous support of individuals and organizations like you that we have been able to address the lives of numerous children and their communities in Ethiopia. Your generous donations have meet several needs, such as, education fees, school materials, uniforms, medical care, supplementary food, clothing, discipleship programs and much more.

However, this is not the end of our vision. In the coming years we plan to reach self sustainably at every location, and fully transform the children who are currently sponsored. In addition to this, we are committed to expand our ministry by partnering with more organizations, in order that we are able to reach more and more children. Because of thoughtful supporters and donors like you, we are continually inspired and are certain that we will achieve all our goals.

I, once again, thank you for the strong commitment that you have shown in our cause, and hope that this alliance continues further.

Tesfatsion Tsegaye

SPECIAL UPDATE OF THIS QUARTER

During this last quarter there were some events that were undertaken: The New Year celebration, the new school year, and Christmas. The Ethiopian New Year celebration was celebrated on September 11, 2011. The children celebrated this holiday with joy by having special meal. A few days later, the children formally began the new academic year. It was obvious that the children were eager to see their classmates and teachers. They were also eager to learn more and plan to score high grades in their studies. On January 7th, the Ethiopian Christmas was celebrated. The CarePoint leaders tried their best to make the holy day more special and purposeful. It’s not only a matter of celebration, but also it is all about the life changing birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The CarePoint staff taught the children the true meaning of Christmas, the celebration of Jesus, the Christ.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

In our new life through Jesus Christ, we can always say, “I am in Christ, the only one who died on the cross, who has forgiven me my sins, and who redeems me with his blood.” Through this lesson, the children learned that Jesus Christ gave them life and watches over them. During this last quarter, the discipleship lesson theme was titled, “God’s plan and His purpose.”

We discussed the story of Noah, Abraham, and Moses. In the progress of time, generations multiply on the face of the earth, the world’s population increases and the world’s wickedness greatly increases as well. (Gen.6:5) God prepared to destroy mankind through a flood. But one man and his family received God’s Commendation, while the rest of humanity faced God’s Condemnation. Noah obediently undertook nearly a century long, ship building project in preparation for saving his believing family. As the floodwaters rose, Noah’s family rode high in God’s loving protection. The very life of Noah and the lives of his family were completely bound up by the promises of God.

God called Abraham to leave his home in Ur of the Chaldeans to travel to a distant but unspecified land. By responding in faith, Abraham obeyed with nothing to cling to but the promises of God promises of a great name, a great nation, and a great blessing for all mankind. Abraham obeyed God’s command through his faith; even though he did not know his destination. “Abraham believed the Lord, and he credited to him as righteousness.” (Gen.15:6)

The infant Moses was providentially spared and raised in the very palace of the one who sought his death! At the age of forty, Moses sought deliverance for his people, but in the wrong way (murder) and spent the next four decades of his life in exile, tending sheep in the Median wilderness. Moses was miserable and with good reason. He had been the one man in all of Egypt who had the opportunity to bring relief to his people. He had position, training, natural ability, and the desire to help. However, he killed a man and forfeited all these advantages he had hoped to use. Moses’ life needed reconstruction, to be sure. But when the rebuilding process was complete, he was a monument to God’s grace.

Today, in order to receive God’s blessing, we must obey His commandments.

MEAL PROVISION

The children at Kechene IEICA express their gratitude for all of the benefits received from the school/drop-in center. All of the children have a thankful heart with one voice. The children are receiving lunch every day during the weekdays. Due to the deep poverty of their guardians and parents who cannot afford much, these meals are the only opportunity for them to receive a variety of food.

The parents and guardians are also grateful for the achievable service given to these destitute children. Because of the daily meal provision, the children’s mental and emotional strength has improved.

TEAM VISIT AND CARE PACKAGE GIFTS

The children jumped with joy when they received their care packages from their sponsor families. All of the children received care packages. They were delivered by Mrs. Karen Wistrom and her team in November 2011, on behalf of the community leader (Greta Byers) of the CarePoint. It was special time for all of the children. Receiving gifts from their sponsors caused great joy for the children!

MEDICAL CHECK-UPS

All of the children received basic medical check-ups by a medical team, who traveled from Colorado in early December, 2011. It is incredibly important that the children receive updated health statuses during the year. Some of the children were given antibiotics and other forms of medical treatment as well.

CHILDREN’S CORNER

Every child connected to Kechene IEICA has the same background; they are destitute and vulnerable. They all received the opportunity to attend school through the support given by their sponsors. Their families were unable to send these children to school, because they could not afford school uniforms, school supplies, and school fees.

At this time the children are very thankful for all the benefits they are receiving from the school. Many of the children continue to become active students. They would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Children’s HopeChest and to the sponsor families for this remarkable life changing service.

CAREPOINT LEADER’S MESSAGE

In the Bible, God promises to the fatherless, “A father of fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity.”(Ps.68:5-6) When I think about these children, this scripture comes to mind.

On behalf of Kechene IEICA School/Drop-in Center, I want to extend my gratitude to you. This is the achievable, life-touching service that you have been giving for the benefit of these vulnerable children. We are thankful for Children’s HopeChest, the sponsor families, and community leaders.

Thank you for the great contributions that you have made to purchase medical supplies and Bibles for the children. We are eternally thankful for all of the concerns that you have shown for these children.

We were blessed by the team visits in this quarter. The love that you have for these needy children is beyond what we imagined. We believe that together we can make a difference!

God bless you all!

Nikodimus Buche
